In the 1989 general elections, he reached the Lok Sabha by defeating Congress candidate V Mohini Giri by a huge margin. The then BJP President gave the message of BJP moving towards the top from the national capital and the party won 85 Lok Sabha seats in the country, increasing from two seats. Then BJP became the third largest party in Parliament after Congress and Janata Dal.
Encouraged by this victory, Advani emerged as a fire brand leader in politics by taking out Rath Yatra in the year 1990. Although Advani reached Parliament for the first time in 1970, he was elected as a Rajya Sabha member from Delhi.
